The bridge will span the Waikari river, downstream from the local Putorino community, providing access to the surrounding farmland. Waikari Bridge was severely damaged during Cyclone Gabrielle in February 2023. Flooding and lateral instability of the riverbed caused large lateral displacements of the existing piers. There is currently a low level access upstream from the damaged structure to provide access to the local community. The Principal wishes to engage a suitably qualified and experienced contractor to undertake the construction of a resilient bridge that will permanently reconnect the local communities and have a positive impact on the surrounding Wairoa district, and wider Hawkes Bay and Gisborne regions. The project is being delivered through a traditional contract model (NZS3910:2013). This form of contract should not present any impediments to the successful delivery of the project. The project is also focused on fostering and enhancing relationships with local Hapu, upskilling the local suppliers, and supporting the local community to build back stronger.
