Nitrogen (N) is fundamental to crop nutrition and the long-term productivity and sustainability of the Australian grains industry. Nitrogen use affects grain yield, grain quality, on-farm emissions intensity, farm business profitability, and many other variables in the Australian grains industry. It represents one of the most significant variable input costs for growers and its effective use is critical to grower’s profitability and sustainability.The review will identify and analyse relevant information, trends, and opportunities from research, technology development, product innovations, on-farm practices and adoption, the regulatory landscape and other relevant factors both nationally and internationally. Those insights will be coupled with stakeholder consultations to develop robust evidence-based recommendations for GRDC to guide future nitrogen-related RD&E investment.
