The carpark will consist of 120 carparks for vehicles, tourist buses and campervans: with public toilets and shelter facilities for a shuttle bus service to and from the visitor centre. The location is 2138 Egmont Road, on a 9284 m² NPDC owned piece of former dairy farmland which has had resource consent approval with a detailed design created by WSP. The Egmont Road Maunga carpark project is a long-term initiative aimed at addressing persistent traffic congestion issues at the North Egmont Visitor Centre’s entrance to Te Papakura o Taranaki (Egmont National Park). The North Egmont Visitor Centre is a popular access point for Taranaki Maunga, especially during summer and holiday periods. However, the existing car park has only 82 spaces, which regularly leads to overcrowding and traffic jams. To manage this, NPDC & our Traffic Management provider have historically implemented a "one car out, one car in" system during peak times. The successful contractor must be able to provide both the key personnel and plant equipment in order to complete this project in the necessary timeframes over the summer construction period of November 2025 to April 2026. Our overall objectives include a carpark that will be built to high standards to ensure durability, functionality, and long-term value for both locals, hapu and visitors accessing Taranaki Maunga.
