The replacement of the maritime helicopters was identified as a major investment decision in the 2025-2028 period. After consideration of a detailed business case, the NZ Government have approved the commencement of negotiations with the US Government for the purchase of MH-60R Seahawk maritime helicopters through the United States Foreign Military Sales programme, with a view to making a final decision in 2026. The scope of the broader Maritime Helicopter Replacement (MHR) Project includes a complementary Uncrewed Aerial Systems (UAS) capability, which will be progressed after the helicopter procurement.
