La ligne S 18 du Forchbahn relie la ville de Zurich à la région du Pfannenstiel, de Zurich Stadelhofen jusqu'à Esslingen. Sur le tronçon entre Forch et Esslingen, de nombreux composants de l'infrastructure ferroviaire ont atteint leur fin de vie et/ou ne répondent plus aux exigences légales ou aux besoins d'exploitation. C'est pourquoi la compagnie Forchbahn a décidé de renouveler les tronçons concernés lors d'une fermeture totale de 16 semaines.
