Summary

The objective of the work is to prepare a detailed scoping review on intervention strategies to reduce wildland firefighters’ exposures to combustion emissions. This would include emissions encountered during all wildland firefighter activities, including, but not limited to, direct fire suppression, mop-up and cold trailing, targeted burning, and fireline construction and maintenance using internal combustion engine power tools (e.g., chain saw). The review would be prepared following critical evaluation and synthesis of all available information including peer-reviewed scientific publications, governmental publications, publications from firefighter unions and advocacy groups, publications from occupational health and safety organizations, and any other pertinent information posted online. The collected information must be organized and critically interpreted, with recommendations regarding a ranked hierarchy of control measures that could be deployed to effectively minimise wildland firefighter combustion emission exposures.
